Break Time

It has been more than 20 days since i completed 5th trimester exams and no college since then (well almost) and this sudden change in routine from full day classes to no classes at all or for that matter nothing at all to do is not good for someone who is always trying to do something or the other to kill time. Now that there is absolutely nothing official to do

On My Wish List

I wish I could fly, I wish I could sing, I wish I had that beautiful bungalow or that car all this and more the list is endless for most of us. My trip to Mumbai this time has added something to the top my wish list, a list which had stopped to exist. This was not the first time i visited Mumbai, first time being admissions to my B School, the second time to represent my college at a national level B school competition and this trip has changed my perception about not just the city but has reinstalled my confidence and interest  in a lot many things. For this time I was in Mumbai for a second round of interview at one of the world’s top and most reputed companies. The fact that my entire trip right from the taxi fair to and from the airport, my air tickets, accommodation and food was entirely sponsored by the company you can imagine the grandness of the company and my excitement behind this post.

The news that I had cleared the telephonic interview and had to appear for the next round took me by surprise, I was elated and the excitement has not decreased even after hours of landing in Bangalore. I do not like the idea of staying alone at a guest house or a hotel hence called my friend who stays in Mumbai and as expected she and her hubby were more than happy to receive me. Packed my bags and left for the airport and throughout i had been only thinking about the next day, I was excited, tensed, nervous and all such feelings frequented me. The flight journey was just normal and nothing unusual to talk about, reached the Mumbai airport and took a Taxi to my friend’s place, luckily i was aware of the locality and had no trouble finding her flat, this is a little unusual for someone who is quite not familiar with her own city. I was meeting my friend after 3 years and her hubby for the first time but the warm welcome the couple displayed did not let me feel so, they had a beautiful flat, very neat, clean and well maintained. It was a great pleasure meeting her after so long and the excitement was obvious on her face too. On reaching i realized that all arrangements for me had already been done, a brand new towel, hot water, soap, tooth brush anything that i would need. Arranging all of it that too at a short notice must have been troublesome to them especially when they are both working but thanks to them for being so considerate and nice.

After a little bit of catching up on things my friend went to the kitchen to arrange for dinner, though I insisted on helping her she was keen that i sit and prepare for the interview. I went into the room which was arranged for me and started ironing my blazer which i had planned to wear the next day. While i was sinking into the discomfort that I was about to attend such an important interview but had not told or rather discussed anything about it with my best friend thinking he would be busy I was called for dinner. We had a great dinner followed by an interesting discussion about the company which i was visiting the next day, i was surprised to see that my friend’s hubby had great knowledge about the company though he has never worked for it, and there was no doubt why this man who is just 29 years old owns a flat in one of posh localities of Mumbai and has a super impressive job. I understood why it is so important for a man to be knowledgeable, conversant, and intelligent all at the same time while still being humble and modest; this was one of the most impressive discussions I had had in the recent past and definitely helped me a great deal. The discussion went on for a long time and I went back to my room to double check if i had all my things in place. I had a good night sleep and woke up by 6.00 am, the interview was scheduled at 11.30 am and my friend had taken the day off to come along with me. We reached the office much before the scheduled time and what i experienced after that will remain with me for the years to come.

The office was located on the 21st
floor of one of India’s tallest buildings and clearly had the most dynamic work environment I had ever witnessed. The first few minutes spent on the office floor were more than enough for me to understand what I was in for and why this company is being rated as one of the world’s best. It was huge, it did not have a campus built on 100s of acres of land like our IT companies do but everything there was just perfect, i was filled with a sense of pride for having cleared the first round and getting an opportunity to attend the next round at their office. Like i said everything was just perfect, the receptionist knew my name even before i could tell her, the people there were full of energy, equipped with the latest gizmos moving in and out with smiles on their faces and confidence in their attitude, looked like someone had electro-charged them with positive ions and i felt like a kid on the first day of school. The environment here was so different from the organizations i have already worked with or the ones i would be soon working with, a little chat with one of the employees there gave me a glimpse of  a typical day in the office and believe you me it is very very different, exciting and far challenging from the mundane jobs being offered often masked with attractive designations and pay packages. It is because of companies like this that we can a distinguish a career from a job, a salary from Compensation, a bonus from perks , a client meeting from an onsite opportunity and a 9 to 6 work from a living my dream phenomenon. I do not care about the results of this interview, whatever it is, i am going to accept it with the same dignity but this experience has definitely changed my view about my career plans and has added a career and not a job in this company on the top of my Wish List and will continue to be till the day i achieve it even if it means doing another  masters degree.
